This beautiful half-acre lot in the Grosvenor Downs development in Granite Bay had established olive trees at the back of the lot which blended well with the Tuscan Italian style of the home. A large, classically styled pool and extensive pool decks are the central feature of the yard.

Diagonal joints and scores in the concrete patio, a contrasting edge, and a mix of earth toned stains give the patios an outstanding look.

In the Italian theme, grape arbors were planned for each side of the pool decks where beautiful decomposed granite pathways originated. A stucco wall was used to screen the pool equipment and the addition of statues and potted plants added a defining touch to the wall.

A central fountain is planned for the far end of the pool and steps transition to a pergols surrounded by olives. Three of the existing olive trees were retained, thinned, and trimmed to anchor the planted area in the back.  A Mediterranean planting palette was ideal for both the theme of the residence and the local climate. Drought tolerant plants were key as well.

The challenge in this site was the large drainage swale on the west side of the property. The swale is the main drain for this section of the development and connects into the City system just beyond the back fence of the property. To give this a more natural look, grassy plants were placed in several locations along the swale and in their second year of growth, they provided nice coverage of the swale edge giving it the appearance of a stream bed.

The side entry to the yard required screening from the neighbor’s home and a combination of Queen Palms (providing immediate screening) and Italian Cypress (providing future screening) worked ideally for this purpose. The ground level understory plantings featured Azaleas and groundcovers. The finishing touch was the Lion Head knocker installed on the gate to the back yard.

Plans included custom design, hardscape plan with drainage, planting plans, lighting, and a color rendering of the plan.
